A joint Iraqi-American archeological team discovered eight marble slabs with designs from the Assyrian period in the historic city of Nineveh.
jahane-gardesh – According to ISNA, citing al-Mayadin, these petroglyphs were discovered at the “Al-Masqi” gate in Nineveh.
Leith Majid Hossein, head of the Iraqi Antiquities Organization, said: In the second season of their excavations, the joint Iraqi-American archeology team has succeeded in discovering stone tablets in Al-Masqi Gate, one of the gates of the old city of Nineveh, which is located in the east of Mosul.
These petroglyphs depict war scenes and the cuneiform readings on them indicate that they belong to the Sennacherib dynasty (681-705 BC).
One of the officials of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Heritage of Iraq said that the purpose of these excavations is to protect the Al-Masqi gate and restore it to its former state before the attacks of ISIS and the destruction of this terrorist group in this historical area.
The discovered stone tablets are relief stones depicting Assyrian soldiers. Also, date trees, grapes, pomegranates and figs are drawn in them. These stone tablets return to the palace of King Sennacherib, whose grandson Sin-Sher-Ishkun transferred them to the gate and destroyed his grandfather’s palace.
